Too windy today!

Spring is officially upon up us and it showed today. The wind was gusting up to 30 MPH so the roofers couldn’t finish the shingles. I’m sure they’ll finish tomorrow morning. Meanwhile, Scott and his crew have finished the the foundation and brick facade for the new addition.

Although, it was windy the scenery is still terrific. I included some picture of the Oak Grove and the new rock wall that Sonny and I build around the pecan trees.

Dumpster Diving

Sonny was such a trooper today. The workers had put in the dumpster all the heavy hand cut stones that formed the bases of the fireplaces. He got in there and dug the huge stones out. Then we arranged them in circles and the pecan trees. They look very nice and have some historical significance as well.

Good thing the weather is nice!

Ok, the roof is almost complete and the good weather is holding out. It was a great spring day today, about 83. Let’s hope this thing holds out until Monday or Tuesday so we can complete the job.

A Beautiful View!

I took my friend, Katie, out to visit our old new house. The construction continues to make great progress. But, you’re not here to read about that.
Katie took some great pictures so I thought I would share them.

What’s on top of the house?

The answer: Very little!  Oscar and his crew at AFA Constructors are doing a great job on the roof. The removed the fireplaces, stacked the brick, and removed the old tar shingles from the house.  They have also removed all of the old cedar shakes (which act as singles).

The wooden cedar shingles gave the house a real farm house look.  You get a good feel for how the house looked in 1901!.

Big Day at Fletcher Broome!

Wow. There was a lot of action today at the Fletcher Broome House. Today we had roofers, plumber, masons, and excavators at the house. All were doing there thing.
The roofers have stripped the roof down to the original cedar shakes. It looks pretty cool.
The masons have pulled down the chimneys to the ground. But, there are some bricks that remain inside the house. So, I’m a little worried about the weight of the bricks on this old floor.
The plumber ran water out to the place and replaced the line to the septic tank.
The GC dug the footings for the new construction and demo-ed enough of the inside of the house to show off the original hardwood floors.

See below

Before we removed the mantle.

One down, one to go.

Today, Oscar (a contractor) started removing the chimneys of which there are now 3. Yes, I said 3, there was a hidden one that we didn’t know about (more on that later).  So, Oscar and his partner (the signing mason) proceeded to take down one of the chimneys today while the whole family watched.  The other should have come down today too but, I haven’t confirmed it yet.

Construction started this week! Kind of …

Well our GC got going this week on the construction.  Actually it was on the Destruction of the unneeded parts.  The house looks oddly worst after 1 week for construction; I mean Destruction.

We’ve removed all the false lower ceilings, kitchen cabinets, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and the enclosed back porch.

Notice the difference in the 2 pictures below (besides the blur factor).  Your see the mantle (more on the mantle later) has been removed and the framing for ceiling too.  If you look carefully at the second picture, you’ll see a white line.  That’s where the false ceiling was, the wood ceiling is another 2 feet higher!

It was a bargain!

Today we inked the contract with Scott, the GC. He reiterated that if we had not bought the house, he would have and he would not have blinked at paying $25K more than we did.
Sonny ripped down the ceiling in the Family Room. It turned out to be 10 ft high and tongue and groove. We now know that the large rectangular room on the back was really two rooms: a family room and a kitchen. We may have to rethink the layout of the rooms a bit.
We also took our outdoor furniture out there and set if under the oak trees. We would have sat there all day if there hadn’t been so much work to do.
