Today, Lynn and I became the proud owners of a 1901 farm house!

Finally, we did it! It took quite a while but we did it.   After haggling with lenders, dealing with agents, managing contractors, and postponing the closing multiple times we did close on our new home today.  Lynn has been great through the whole process and I only ‘lost it’ a couple of times.

Closing scheduled for Friday!

I delivered the last of the documents to the lenders, contractors, architects, and insurance companies. I think this it. Let’s hope that the third time is a charm! I know that Lynn is wearing her “Perhaps Today” button and I’m just making sure all the “i’s are crossed” and the “t’s dotted”.

Wish us luck!

Who would do this?

Lynn and I have talked to countless people about this and we get a lot of positive responses but I want to be a bit more scientific.

Closing? Well… no, but we do have drawings.

Today was supposed to be closing day for the Fletcher Broome house but we couldn’t get all the parties to agree on the final terms. Hopefully, it will happen next week. We are both a bit disappointed but trying to take the long view. It’s not easy. Lynn doing a great job of keeping us both sane.

We did get some good news, the architect delivered a few CAD drawings for the outside elevations. Take a look.
Front Elevation

We hope to add a wrap around porch.

Existing space but we'll add some doors and windows

We’ve added some French doors to this side. We’ll also build a stone patio out here. It should be beautiful since it is full of 150 year old Oak trees.
Right Elevation

We have added some additional space on this side of the house.

Our initial meeting with the Architect . . .

Yesterday, Lynn and I meet with our architect to review the “as built” drawings, discuss living requirements, and the design of the new addition. Needless to say, we are a long way from the goal line but it feels good to take the first step.

It was interesting to see Lynn during these meetings. She seems to know ever room like the back of her hand (even reciting the room dimensions).

We can’t wait to start publishing pictures of the design and construction work. Stay tuned . . .

The 1901 Home we are renovationing!

We have found a nice old farm house to renovate and then live.  I thought I would publish a few pictures of the place.  All of the rooms in the house have wooden walls made from tongue-n-groove pine.  All the ceilings are 12 feet high and it has 3 fire places.

There are plenty of challenges with getting this house in to shape so stay tuned as we track the progress for the renovation.

Architects and GC’s

Sonny got out to the house today to meet with the GC (W. Scott Query) and the Architect (John Urban).  Both have worked together before on renovation 2 homes for the city of Matthews, NC.  Each sits on the board of directors for the Matthews Historical Society.

You can see our architect’s web site at http://www.urbanaia.com/

Massey Clark House, Matthews, NC

Today Lynn and I are going to visit to homes in Matthews, NC which were built in the 1880’s.  We are using the architect and general contractor that restored both of these homes.  Take a look. The Massey Clark House

The Fletcher Broome House

This year for Christmas Lynn and I decided to buy a house for each other.   The house, “The Fletcher Broome” house was build in 1901.
You may be asking, “What kind of shape is it in?”  or “Does it need much work?” Well, it’s in great shape and yes it needs a lot of work.
Right now, the house is under contract and we are hoping to close by the end of January 2011.  Wish us luck!
